Honoring FARMER OF THE YEAR
John DeRosier
John DeRosier of With the Grain Farm is a Cal Poly graduate from the Earth and Soil Sciences Department who is currently a grower of heirloom and rare edible seed crops (grains). All acreage that he farms is certified organic and biodynamic. He also operates a certified kitchen for local valued added processing and feeds all of his farm animals with grains he grows himself.

STRIDE’s annual ‘Hands on Health’ collaborative event invited members from the entire community to activities related to health in an educational atmosphere. This year’s Hands on Health consisted of a symposium focused on addressing the obesity challenge and featured a presentation by four panelists including Congresswoman Lois Capps, Roots of Change President Michael Dimock, and Drs. Deanna Hoelscher and Steven Kelder from the University of Texas. Hands on Health was a FREE, public event open to all!

Dr. Shapiro is Corporate Staff Officer for Plant Science and External Affairs, Mars, Incorporated and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis.
Dr, Shapiro has been involved with sustainable agricultural and agroforestry systems, plant breeding, molecular biology and genetics for over 40 years. He has worked with indigenous communities, NGO’s, governmental agencies and the private sector around the world. A former Fulbright Scholar, Ford Foundation Fellow, in 2007 Howard was recognized by his peers with the Lifetime Leadership Achievement Award from the Organic Trade Association; in 2008 he was made a Fellow of the World Agroforestry Centre and authored the IAASTD chapter on Biotechnology and Biodiversity. He is member of the National Research Council Committee on Citrus and Greening, a founding member of the Keystone Roundtable on Sustainable Agriculture, co-chair of the 1st and 2nd World Congress of Agroforestry and is Chairperson of the External Advisory Board of the Agriculture Sustainability Institute at UC Davis. In 2009 he was named recipient of The Award of Distinction from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, UC Davis. He leads the global effort sequencing, annotating and assembling the Theobroma cacao genome, published on the 15th of September 2010 and placed in the public domain, patent protected. A founder of Seeds of Change, he serves on the Board of Directors today.
Dr. Shapiro has co-authored 4 books: Gardening for the Future of the Earth; Gardencycle; New Vistas in Agroforestry; Chocolate History, Culture and Heritage. Additionally, he is currently co-authoring The Science of Theobroma cacao L.: Botany, Chemistry and Medicine; and The Traditional Uses of Cacao in Meso-America.
