1. SARC helping to gauge Economic Impacts of INVASIVE PESTS!
SARC recently received funding from the state Invasive Pest Coalition (IPC) to gather and analyze data to determine the economic impacts on growers who are placed under quarantine for harmful pests. Professor David Headrick is working with graduate student Maria Murrietta on the analysis. Results of the project will gauge threats posed by invasive insects, in particular, the light brown apple moth or the glassy winged sharpshooter, as well as costs of quarantines in two California Counties (Kern and Sonoma). In the future, it is hoped project results will be built upon to include other pests, and other regions, in California’s efforts to battle harmful, non-native insects. The IPC comprises a broad range of farming organizations committed to supporting efforts to prevent the introduction of invasive pests in California.
